ÉDOUARD RISLER, a pupil of Louis Diémer (1843-1919), was a major figure in the French piano tradition. His few records, for Pathé in 1917, are so rare that it has taken years to get them all together. This has turned out to be an advantage as in the mean time the technology for transferring recordings generally, and Pathé recordings in particular, has made great strides. His very rare Pathé records of 1917.

PASQUALE AMATO
A singer rather overlooked by many collectors, perhaps as he has been best known as the lower voice in duets. His operatic solo recordings for Fonotipia demonstrate why he had a major career in opera, and how in lighter songs he can relax with elegance and charm.
The complete Homochord series of 1924 totally disproves reports of failing powers.

Records of CELESTINA BONINSEGNA (1877-1947) place her
amongst the greatest singing actresses of the gramophone.
The media publicity machine was invented for Patti and Patti became an industry; indeed, today Patti would rank with the pop-idols. But this should not obscure the fact that she was one of the greatest singers of her own or any era. The records, made when she was more or less retired, afford fascinating glimpses of her former greatness and insights into performing practices of her era.
This album contains all the music recorded by Adelina Patti
The early gramophone was, perhaps, even less able to deal with Berlioz than with Wagner, and, in any case, Berlioz was much less "commercial". Nevertheless, some remarkable records were made, and this CD is a useful introduction to them.
JOSEF HASSID (1923-50) - complete recordings, 1939-1940
PHILIP NEWMAN (1904-66) - complete recordings, ?1965, and interviews: Moscow 1958
Josef Hassid's career had hardly begun when insanity made confinement unavoidable. Othewise this Carl Flesch pupil would most certainly have become an international name.
Philip Newman also had the talent for an international career, but the war and, perhaps his personality held him back. The booklet sets right the strange rumour of his origin.
